Bra-fessional5.Dec.2003“This won’t hurt a bit. I’m a Bra-fessional”Ashley, my five year old, said this to me as she prepared to ‘remove’ something from my leg with the aid of her newly purchased medical kit from the dollar store. I was thinking that I could sure use a BRA-fessional, as my bra keeps giving me fits by riding up where it’s not supposed to be riding up. I’m pretty sure that’s not what she had in mind though. She’d been given a coveted trip to the dollar store to spend the dollar she’d received as a bribe today. Yes, I admit to bribing my children. I agreed to give her a dollar in exchange for her cooperation in wearing her neoprene hand brace for the entire day. The brace keeps her hand from its normally clenched position and keeps her thumb separate. The stroke she suffered in the womb left the right side of her little body a little mess. But today she is a Bra-fessional and I am receiving the best possible Bra-fessional care available in my neighborhood. As she taps my leg with her plastic instruments, she speaks in a reassuring voice to let me know that although this might hurt, it’s for my own good. Putting one tool down on the bed, she carefully selects another to continue her delicate work on my leg. Ashley is mirroring the behavior that she has seen directed at herself during her abundant five years on this earth. She has spent countless hours in hospitals and doctor’s offices, receiving the gentle care and loving kindness of numerous doctors and nurses. She is not afraid of Neurologists, Nurses, or Physical Therapists. In fact, there isn’t much that is daunting to this incredibly resourceful little soul. The “I can do it myself” mantra, used by countless children as they become accomplished shoelace manipulators, or master the zippers and buttons on clothing, has a more significant meaning for my Ashley Rose. Since she only has control of her left hand, she uses her right hand as a helper, steadying objects on it and against it. She’s quite resourceful. As I watch her struggle with a task, tongue sticking out between her teeth, brow furrowed in concentration, I marvel that she doesn’t become frustrated and lose her temper. I would. I have. And I have the use of both my hands and both my legs. But she doesn’t know life any other way. My Bra-fessional finished up her treatment and packed up her equipment to go visit another patient in need. As she was leaving, I asked her what she wanted to do when she grew up. “Oooh Mom. You know I’m going to be a Doctor!” I can’t think of anyone that would make a better doctor. Knowing what it’s like to be on the other side of that stethoscope is a tool that can’t be learned in a classroom. She may only be five years old, but I think she’s going to make a darn good Bra-fessional one day. |
