Santa's Helpers

11.December.2003

Dear Santa,

It's been a long, long time since I've written you a letter. I apologize for that. You see, I've been busy growing up, getting married, raising children and being an adult. I haven't had much time for letter writing and to tell you the truth, I haven't believed in you for years.

Oh sure, I told my children you were real. Every year they would ask about you and what you were doing and I'd tell them you were up at the North Pole getting ready for Christmas with your elves and reindeer. You were getting all the presents made for good little boys and girls. I admit to using you as a way to keep my kids in line during the holiday season. It worked like a charm until they got older and began to question your existence Santa.

Stephanie: "Santa isn't real Mom!"
Christopher: "Yeah! You just made him up!"
Me: "If you stop believing, he stops coming"

This elicited the patented eye rolling response from both children but they eventually relented and told me of course they believed in you. We all knew this was only said to ensure that presents would be under the Christmas tree, but that was all right. As long as the two younger girls didn't have to question your existence, we were all right. You know that Allison and Ashley still believe in you Santa. They are only five and seven, so life hasn't had a chance to wear them down yet.

I, on the other hand, don't believe in a lot of things that I used to believe in Santa. I grew up and became responsible for four little people. But something has changed for me this year and I just wanted you to know that I believe in you once again.

I know that whole 'sees when you are sleeping, knows when you're awake' thing that you do. Well, then you know there have been a lot of people not sleeping much this year. Boeing laid off a bunch of people, and so did a lot of other places. It hasn't been an easy year for a lot of families Santa. I'm writing to ask that you thank some of your helpers for me. I know you have them because they have been there to help out some of these families when they needed it.

One of your helpers sent gift certificates to a family so they could shop at a mall to get Christmas presents for their children this year. Would you please thank your elf that did that? The family had to cash them in to use for paying their mortgage and they were sorry about that Santa. Please tell your elf that they appreciated the gift and were sorry they had to use it in a different way.

A group of your elves took 24 students from an elementary school on a shopping spree for clothing this month Santa. They said they were from the Rotary Club, but we know they were your elves in disguise. I know you see everything Santa, so would you tell your elves how these children tried on their new clothes with big smiles on their faces? Please thank them Santa.

One of your elves put some money in an envelope and mailed it to a family that was struggling. They did it anonymously Santa. It might not have been a lot of money to them, but it was a lot for that family. Tell your elves how much it was appreciated and that they used it wisely to purchase groceries.

I saw another of your elves raking the leaves of an elderly lady in our neighborhood. She lives alone and suffers from Alzheimer's. Your elf did a very good deed that day.

Santa, I believe in you again. I wish I'd never stopped. I think I spent too much time being a grownup and listening to all the bad news on the television. There is a lot of bad things going on out there Santa, but thanks to you and your elves, there is quite a lot of good that is happening as well.

Merry Christmas Santa!

Love,
Pamela

p.s. we will leave you cookies and milk on Christmas eve as always. The carrots are for your reindeer Santa, although feel free to eat them if you want to. A healthy snack couldn't hurt!

Pamela, I just read your column in our local newspaper and enjoyed what you wrote. I think a lot of us don't believe in Santa when we grow up and get caught up in our own lives. You have inspired me to be an 'elf' this year to someone less fortunate. Thank you for helping me see the value I can be to others. Sincerely, Sam
